Prudential Uganda donated UGX 300,000,000 million ($ 800,000) towards food relief in the country.
The donation will feed the most vulnerable and poor who have been greatly affected by the lockdown, many of whom live on less than a dollar a day and therefore do not have any savings to help them go through this period. This is distributed via two organisations: Humanitarian Operations Projects and Emergencies (HOPE) and Heal the Planet Global Organisation (HTP).
“Communities across the country have been greatly affected by lockdown measures designed to curb the spread of Covid-19. These measures, while implemented with positive intent, have adversely affected the most vulnerable people in our communities, who survive by being able to access the urban centres every day for their livelihood. Disruption of this routine means some people are going hungry in their home. In order to supplement government efforts to provide food relief, and support those most in need, we are announcing this donation of Uganda Shillings 300 million” said Arjun Mallik, MD, Prudential East Africa while addressing the press at their head office in Kampala
Alhaji Kaddunabi Lubega, CEO, Insurance Regulatory Authority said “the outbreak of Covid19 has highlighted to all of us, the need to always be prepared for the unexpected challenges of life. I convey my gratitude to Prudential Uganda for standing by Ugandans in this hour of need”
While receiving the fund on behalf of HOPE, Emmanuel Kashaija, Country Director, appreciated Prudential for supporting the vulnerable slum dwellers in the western region who have been profiled as elderly people, orphan households, pregnant women, street children and the disabled, adding that the food relief will go along way in improving their social and psychological well-being.
“I would like to thank Prudential for the timely response towards helping the slum dwellers around Kampala in the areas of Nsambya, Katwe, Bwaise and Makerere kivulu, Makindye, Masajja. These people are in dire need of food and we will work with the local council to make sure food is delivered at their doorstep.” said, Benjamin Kivumbi Earnest, President, HTP.
This food relief fund is part of the contributions Prudential Uganda has made towards the fight against COVID-19 and its impact. Very early on in the crisis, Prudential took the decision to ensure that all our clients, staff, agents and indeed as many Ugandans that might, unfortunately, get diagnosed with Covid-19, are given a cash payout to help their families manage expenses.
The Prudential food relief fund has been provided by Prudential Uganda with the support of the Prudence Foundation, the community investment arm of Prudential plc in Asia and Africa, and Chairman’s Challenge, Prudential’s flagship international volunteering, that brings together people from across the Group to help their communities.

FULL STATEMENT OF KIVUMBI EARNEST BENJAMIN
The world is facing a major calamity in the history of our life time. The Corona Virus Pandemic has paralysed all activities affecting Governments, Organisations and People’s daily lifestyle. Nobody has ever believed that there would be a situation that will leave 7 Billion people on earth indoor and others quarantined.
Since the outbreak of Corona Virus Pandemic, third world countries with families surviving on less than a dollar per day have been heavily affected.
These do not have food stored nor savings to sustain them during this lock down and whereas government is trying to reach out to them, it has been proven that it
has not even covered half of the targeted population according to the local media as well as the survey made by Heal The Planet Global Organisation through focused group discussions carried out.
We’re grateful that Prudential Insurance Company has thought about these urban poor people and given back to the community amidst harsh economic crisis the world has gotten into.
We had earlier reached out to several entities to support this campaign as we have always gotten financial support from companies, individuals, governments and organization whenever we reach out to them to support our causes and campaigns.
The donation of UGX 150m Prudential has decided to avail to us will contribute to food aid for some families estimated at 6000 in areas namely Nsambya, Katwe, Bwaise and Makerere kivulu (in Kampala), Makindye, Masajja, (in Wakiso).
We’re going to feed urban poor families affected by corona virus pandemic. These are daily income earners and do not have enough savings nor food to sustain them in this lockdown and immediately after since it will take them a bit of time to return to their normal way earning.
This project is immediate due to the urgency of the matter and will span for a period of two months.
We aim at providing posho and beans to 6000 individuals to sustain them for atleast 20 days.
As an NGO, we are permitted to conduct any humanitarian activities but we are going to involve local authorities at distribution level including LCs, RDCs and
Police as mandated by the law during this time.
